Short stories, that famously uncommercial form of fiction

“The Old Wife,” published in 2007 by Potomac Review, is a very brief favorite of mine. This story holds the surprising revelations of an abandoned wife. Is her life wrecked? her self-esteem flogged when her professor husband chooses to live with one of his students, leaving his wife and their two children?

“I was longing to escape the almost unbearable load of pity the town was rushing in my direction, but the counselor said the children should be near their father, especially our son Kevin. Kevin, himself wouldn’t give me any kind of signal regarding his needs as though having an opinion would implicate him in the mess.”
